To begin, this is completely surreal and upsetting. I have to admit that I’m feeling teary while writing this. One of my friends from Vancouver Island is staying at Ronald McDonald House with her daughter RIGHT NOW. I can’t IMAGINE how scary it would be to have a child who needs long term medical treatment, let alone having to stay away from home while receiving it.
Consequently, I’ve been texting her and have heard first hand about the tremendous comfort her family has felt at being welcomed into RMH. She sent me the weekly schedule of events that is chock full of family fun to help create memories and give everyone something to look forward to. Their long days at the hospital are punctuated with Dirt Therapy With Master Gardeners, Massage Therapy, September Birthday Party, Music Therapy, Teen Jam Session, and Games Night: Pictionary.
She told me that she especially appreciates the delicious home-cooked family dinner hosted by volunteer groups, 5 nights a week. There’s so much on her plate right now and it’s a gift to not have to worry about shopping, cooking and cleaning up. There’s also a brunch one morning a week and common cupboards full of food for them to access.
As a result, her family feels support and care despite the hardships their daughter is facing right now. This is all made possible thanks to volunteers and fundraising.
Are you wondering what YOU can do to help out?
