You know the saying “West Coast, Best Coast”? Well, EVERY single time I go to Tofino, I wonder why I don’t go there more often. Here’s our list of Top Things to Do with our family.
Even though I grew up just over an hour away, in Port Alberni, it’s without question that the West Coast has a different energy and unparalleled beaches, trees, and laid-back culture.
We recently headed there with my entire family to celebrate my dad’s 65th and my grandma’s 86th birthdays.
We wasted no time visiting some our favourite old haunts and discovered some new ones!
OK, so before you think “cha-ching, bling bling”, we got a locals discount. A really amazing off-season locals discount (with our Port Alberni addresses).
The Wickanninish is renowned as one of the top resorts in Canada and it’s easy to see why. The rooms, the service, and the stunning west coast views were perfect for a family getaway together.
We were especially impressed by the children’s beach toy package that greeted us, and the fun children’s scavenger hunt. The adults also loved the complementary port! My 87 year old grandma was enthralled with the rugged west coast views, and the chance to spend quality family time.
We’re saving up for our house, but wanted to treat ourselves in the spa. Instead of a full expensive treatment (which would have been so nice—one day!) we opted instead for the Eucalyptus Steam Room at $10 each. We also had some appies and drinks at the dining room instead of going there for a full meal.
This was our first time at The Wick, but we’d all love to go back!

I like this one better than Long Beach; it just seems to be more laid back and have more character. Everything about it epitomizes ‘West Coast’. Fun Fact: My hubby and I walked along this beach for our first date.
This is my favourite trail and is in Ucluelet. Yup, we also went here on our first date. The thing about this trail is that every single viewpoint is even more stunning than the next. Go there: I guarantee you will agree. Also worth checking out in ‘Ukee’ is the Ucluelet Aquarium.
4. Tonquin Trail: Off the beaten path of downtown Tofino. Tonquin is a cool trail, board walk and small beach with some unique rock formations. It seems like it’s more of a place locals go.
This festival has become an annual Spring Break family tradition, especially the Maritime Kids Day with art and activities, entertainment. My son loves Whale Fest and asks to go every year. https://www.pacificrimwhalefestival.com/
Is a brand new vegan restaurant in ‘downtown’ Tofino. We’re not vegan but don’t mind eating our veggies every now and then. Order this: Avocado Margarita. Cauliflower Hot Wings. Tostadas.
Needs no introduction. It’s a mecca. Order this: Fish Tacos. Tortilla Soup. Tofino Kombucha. Devil Cookie.
Recently moved to their spacious new taproom, right next to the original one!
Order this: Lager Beer Caesar(s) and Smoked Salmon. Their Kelp Stout is also worth trying. And their Blonde Lager is probably my favourite beer ever. And… my hubby and I also came here on our first date.
Order this: Homemade Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich paired with a pint of Tofino Blonde Ale. I’ve also heard their soups are amazing but have only had dessert there! http://www.sobo.ca/
Order this: In-House Hand Roasted Organic Coffee. Freshly Made Donut.
Did we miss anything? What are your favourite places to stay and things to do on the West Coast?
